Asian Success in the Western World

I came across another article on rediff on this Chinese guy called Kai-Fu Lee, who was the VP at Microsoft and has recently switched to go work for Google. What I liked the most was his career trajectory along with his deep interest and faith in Chinese talent. And how this new job in Google will do good for both him and his home China.. Another thing that was very truly said was :

“The challenge for foreign companies was to help those new technologists leaven their traditional Asian values with a more Western mind-set. “What it is going to take for success in the 21st century is a combination of both,” Lee explained. “How you adjust the humility with confidence, the perseverance with self-criticalness, the courage with the serenity.”

I myself have always tried to balance both my traditional values with the Western ways of life. One that I have most trouble with however is, Ahankaar (pride) being one of the vices, and confidence without which one can’t acheive anything in this competitive world. But, i guess the combination of both is the perfect solution to success…

Gala at Anderson House

On Saturday night, Mom and I went to a Gala organized by her company HRCI(SHRM) at the Anderson House on Mass Ave in Washington DC. The combination of the ambience in the house along with my long flowing gown and everyone else in black tie clothing, it felt as if I was in a Jane Austen novel. This house belonged to the Andersons in the early 1900s, and we got a very lovely tour of it. The event was also full of good food and wine. Here are some pictures: (I finally got to wear my evening gown that I have had for years). For more info:

Canoeing in the Shenandoah River

Last week Shank and I went canoeing with Akhil and Gia at the Shenandoah River, about an hour and half drive. Well, out initial plan was to go tubing but coz of low levels, we were suggested to canoe instead. But, it was good fun, we did have some accidents over the rapids, but it was all good. Shank and I were able to test our rescue abilities as Akhil and Gia’s Canoe toppled in the biggest rapids, and they were stuck in the middle of the river with lots of bruises and cuts… Shank rescued the boat, while I rescued our friends out of the fast rapid. Inspite of the accidents, it was a great trip, and we made new good friends… :)

Run for the Cure

Saturday June 3rd, mom dragged Shank and me to the Race for the Cure, an event to raise money for Breast Cancer Research and help. The pix will prove how early we had to wake up to get here, and becoz we were late, we joined the walking group and finished about 5 Kilometers. It was a very well organized event.
